Why CBD vape oil crystallises (and how ours is made to resist it)
Ever had a CBD vape go cloudy, gritty or just stop hitting? Chances are it crystallised. It's one of the most common complaints with CBD vapes, and it's down to basic chemistry rather than a dud pen.
CBD wants to be a crystal
Pure CBD (isolate) is a white crystalline powder at room temperature. To make vape liquid, it's dissolved into a carrier. Pack in a lot of CBD — a 1000mg pen is a lot — and the liquid gets close to holding as much as it can. Give it a nudge and some CBD comes back out of solution as tiny crystals.
What nudges it
- Cold. Liquids hold less dissolved CBD when they're cold. A night in a cold car or a winter coat pocket is a classic trigger.
- Very isolate-heavy blends. A liquid that's mostly one pure compound crystallises more readily than a mix of different compounds.
- Time and stillness. Crystals that start forming can act as seeds for more.
Signs it's happening
Cloudy or milky liquid, visible specks or a sandy texture, weak or no vapour, or a pen that feels clogged.
What you can do
- Store your pen at normal room temperature, out of the cold and out of direct sun.
- If it has gone cloudy from cold, let it warm up slowly — hold it in your hand or keep it in a pocket for a while. Don't use a hairdryer, radiator or hot water, as high heat can damage the hardware.
- If it still won't flow, get in touch.
How we make ours
Our 1000mg vape pens and pods aren't just isolate in a carrier. We blend CBD isolate with CBDa, CBG and aromatic terpenes, and the liquid is formulated to help resist crystallisation at normal room temperature, so it flows consistently, pull after pull. It's not magic: very cold conditions can still affect any CBD liquid, so the storage tips above still apply.
